as fall shivers and shrivels into winter
your soul keeps quiet underneath the covers
the leaves drop and kids play in the piles
and only get pulled out by concerned mothers
the schools get canceled for one big snow day
and we come home with freezing bodies and cold noses
the heater gets turned up and the coffee is extra warm
all because of a little winter that imposes
the winter hugs the streets and cities
and leaves you with a chill each time you step outside
and as you wear heaps of clothes
you stay inside (the only place warm to confide)
the snowball fights with little childrens red faces
linger back into your mind
you remember how it was back then
and think how you're so blind
this season isnt about clutching onto warmth
but for once letting yourself get cold
and for realizing this you know
what tomorrow will hold
* * *
the alarm buzzes and you
wake with a smile
you know today
with be worthwhile
and so you get ready and put your
winter suit on
theice cold airstings yourlungs
with each breath you've drawn
you see a friend in need of help
in the battle she is caught in
so you ball up some snow
and give yourself a grin
hitting the target is easy
winning is the hard part
but there will always be other battles
if winter doesn't depart
