About Quizilla
What is Quizilla?
Quizilla is a place for users to write and share great content. It started out, as the name suggests, as a place to make, take and share quizzes. However, since it launched in 2002, it has grown beyond just quizzes and is now a leading destination for stories, poems and other user generated content. Whether you want to create, take and share quizzes, tests and polls; write stories, poems, lyrics, or a personal journal; or play games, Quizilla has something for everyone.
How Long Has Quizilla Been Around?
Quizilla's been around since August 4th, 2002, when its original creator, Matthew Nielsen, first launched the site.
Are all the quizzes made by one person?
No. All the quizzes on Quizilla are made by individual users. Anyone can sign up for a free account and begin making quizzes, stories, journals and more.
What's New with Quizilla/What Happened To…?
Why did you change the old site?
Basically the old site was outdated and unstable. The coding behind the scenes had become such a mess that it was virtually impossible to fix some of the biggest bugs or add new features. And even though those of you who really learned how to use the site were comfortable with it, tons of people were not and had major problems using it, particularly new users. In order to keep Quizilla alive, we have to bring in new people, which in turn means simplifying navigation, etc.
Are the creations I made on the old site still here?
For the most part. We have moved all of your content—except for polls—over to the new site, in addition to your journals, comments, friends, picks, watch list, and messages. However, it will take several days for everything to transfer over, so don't worry if all your stuff doesn't show up right away. We'll let you know when the transfer process is complete.
What happened to Penny the pencil monster?
Penny is no longer the official Quizilla logo but she will appear on the site as our mascot.
Can I still use the old quiz editor to create stories?
No. You no longer have the option of choosing between the "original" quiz editor and the new-style editor when creating a story. Each content type now has its own new editor—one for stories, one for quizzes, and so on—which should help cut down on all of the miscategorized content. The new editors work better, faster, and more reliably. Once you get used to them, you won't miss the old ones at all.
What happened to the stories and poems I created using the "original" quiz editor?
We've done our best to move them over to the new site to display in the new editors, although they might appear somewhat odd. You may need to go back and edit them a bit to make them display more attractively.
What happened to the creations that I set to private on the old site, that nobody else could view?
Any content you published and set as viewable to "Nobody" under your privacy options is now on your "Stuff I Made" page in the "unpublished" section, viewable only to you. There is no longer a "Nobody" viewing option for published content, but you can choose "People with the password only" to allow only select users access to your creations and maintain the same level of privacy, or "Friends" only, to allow only users on your "Friends" list to see you creations.
What happened to the layouts I created on the old site?
Unfortunately, any layouts and themes you created on the old site won't work here. You can recreate your layouts using the new theme engine, but they haven't directly moved over to the new site.
How do I customize my creations if I can't use layouts?
The way stuff can be customized has changed. We've built a brand new theme engine that will allow you to theme every type of content—even profiles—and use the same themes across multiple types of content. And it is much easier to use, and more powerful. It's not up and running yet but it's coming really soon, so be sure to check back often.
Why did you get rid of content ratings on the site?
We removed the ratings system so that there would be one set of standards for all content. But the profanity rules have not really changed. The ratings system always relied on our users properly rating their creations, but unfortunately, this was rarely the case. The ratings system gave the impression that all content rated T, for instance, would be accurately and safely rated. This led to many a misleading search, with often terribly inappropriate content being returned. The ratings categories of M and A also lead to the impression that graphic sexual content was allowed -- to quote many a user "why else would you have those ratings?" So without the ratings system we can very simply say that excessive swearing and sexually explicit content are not allowed on Quizilla, period.
Will my writing be affected now that the site doesn't have any ratings?
The removal of content ratings shouldn't affect your writing at all, as the rules for acceptable content on the site are not really changing. Swearing is still allowed in your creations but shouldn't be gratuitous (swearing just for the sake of swearing) or excessively vulgar (which would fall under "sexually explicit" anyway), and the posting rules regarding graphic sexual content are the exact same ones as those you agreed to when you originally registered for Quizilla. Sexually explicit content, including "lemons," has never been allowed on Quizilla and never will be.
What happened to the "My Quizilla" section?
The former "My Quizilla" page has been replaced with "Stuff I Made." From the "Stuff I Made" hub you can access all the same features you could from "My Quizilla," including links to all your creations, your profile, messages, journal, friends, favorites (previously "picks"), watch list, images, and saved results. However, "Stuff I Made" is much easier to navigate. And since you can now create folders and categories for all content types, it's also much more organized.
I can't edit/delete my journal posts. What's the deal?
You can't currently edit or delete journal posts you create but you'll be able to soon, don't worry.
Where is my "Album?"
There are no longer separate pages for your images and your album. Now, all your images are stored in a central "Images" page, where you can organize and browse them by category. Other users cannot view your "Images" page.
Why aren't stories featured on The Ultimate List anymore?
Although we'd love to continue featuring stories on The Ultimate List, it's just not feasible. Stories can be pretty lengthy, which makes it difficult to read through very many and select one for The Ultimate List each day.
What happened to my homepage?
Your homepages aren't accessible right now but don't worry; they will be brought back. We'll be displaying your homepages just as soon as we can. Once we do, you'll be able to view and edit them as always.
How have the content lists changed and what are the new criteria for being featured on them?
There are still lists for Top Rated (formerly Highest Rated), Most Popular, and Newest (formerly Recently Added) content. However, the criteria for being featured on them have slightly changed. To give more users an opportunity to be featured, the Top rated and Most Popular lists now update more frequently. Therefore, content is only eligible for the lists during the first 30 days of publication. Content that is more than 30 days old won't qualify for the lists any longer, and will disappear from any lists it was previously on. For more information on specific lists and eligibility, see "The Lists" section of the FAQ.
Can I still save the results of quizzes and tests I've taken?
Not currently. This feature isn't available right now but will be in the future.
What happened to my Saved Results page?
Although it's not here yet, we'll be adding a Saved Results page that you'll be able to access from "Stuff I Made" to keep track of your quiz and test results.
Where did all my messages go?
All your messages are still here; you just can't access them all at the moment. We're moving them to the new site, but since there are around 20 million of them, it takes time. We've tried to transfer all your most recent messages, and will be loading in older messages within the next few days.
Why are some of my stories now displaying weird? They looked fine on the old site.
If any of your stories are displaying oddly on the new site, chances are you created them using the quiz editor and then classified them as quizzes rather than stories. Unfortunately, when we moved all the content over, everything categorized as a quiz was automatically moved into the new quiz editor, even if some creations were in fact stories. As a result, those stories now appear cut off. If any of your stories are affected by this or you notice an issue with another user's story, use the "Report It" feature to send our moderators a message about it. Be sure to include links to the stories you're referring to, and we'll do our best fix them for you. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
Why are the view counts for my creations so off? I had X view counts on the old site and they're not showing up here!
All your view counts were set to zero for launch, and will start counting from there, but don't worry; your old view counts have been saved and will be added to your new view counts eventually. It's just going to take a little time to pull them over to the new site.

I tried to verify my e-mail account, but the message never came.
Follow these tips. Check:that the e-mail address you registered with is correct;if your e-mail box is full;if your e-mail software thinks the notification e-mail is "spam," then you will need to check your junk mail or spam folders. In extreme situations, you may need to contact your internet service provider (e.g., AOL, SBC, Cox Cable, Earthlink, etc.) and have them whitelist the Quizilla.com domain name.

Tags are keywords used to describe your creations. They are separated by spaces. For example, tags for a Harry Potter quiz might include: harrypotter harry hermione ron wizard Hogwarts. It's important that your creations are accurately tagged in order for people to find your content. You can add tags to a new piece of content or edit existing tags on a previously created piece of content by going to the "Options" tab of the corresponding content editor and entering keywords in the "Tag it!" box.
How do I save my quiz, story or other creation to finish later?
All of the content editors have a "Save As Draft" button. At any time you can press the "Save As Draft" button to save an unfinished creation to your "Stuff I Made" page. You can access it from there later to continue editing or to publish it to Quizilla. Draft versions are not visible to anyone except you.

Once you finish your creation and have set all the options for it, click on the "Preview" tab and hit "Publish." You'll receive a confirmation message that your creation successfully published.
I don't want everyone to view my creations. Is there a way to limit who can see my stuff?
Yes. You can either allow only your Quizilla friends to view your creations, or only people with a designated password. However, you can't apply these options to all creations automatically; you must set each creation individually. To set either option, click on the "Options" tab in the corresponding content editor and select either "Friends only" or "People with password only" from the "Can view" drop-down menu. If you chose "People with password only," enter the required password in the appropriate field. Then click "Next" to move to the preview screen and publish your work. Note: Clicking "Publish" if you've already published the creation won't republish it; any changes you made to the content or options will just be updated.
How do I manage or change anything on my creations?
You can always go back and organize or edit your creations at any time by visiting the "Stuff I Made" page. To make changes, just click the "Edit" link next to the piece of content you wish to change and this will bring up the corresponding content editor.

Note: Clicking "Publish" if you've already published the creation won't republish it; any changes you made to the content or options will just be updated.

What is my Quizilla Profile?
Your Quizilla Profile is a public information page about you and what you have done on the site. It shows: your username, when you joined the site, how many times your profile has been viewed, the date of your last login, your newest creations, some of the friends on your friends list, some of the favorites on your favorites list, your recently used tags, your latest journal entry (if applicable), and your daily horoscope (optional). This page can also show a profile picture and an optional headline and blurb with additional user info.
How do I add a picture to my profile?
Go to your profile and click the "edit profile" link next to your name. This will take you to the Edit Profile page. In the "My Info" section of the "About Me" tab, there's a "Picture" field. Stuff I Made
What is "Stuff I Made"?
This is where you can access everything about your account (your profile, messages, journal, friends, favorites, images, watch list and saved results) and manage all your creations.
What are content categories?
Content categories are optional groups you can create and assign content to. They help you organize your creations and work basically the same way as folders.
How do I assign a piece of content a category?
Go to your "Stuff I Made" page and click the "categorize" link to the right of the piece of content you wish to categorize. This will open the Manage Categories box. Type the category/categories you'd like to assign the creation in the "categories" field, or click an existing category link if the category you want was previously assigned to something else. Then click "OK." Your creation should now appear under the designated category/categories.
How do I delete a piece of content from the site?
Go to your "Stuff I Made" page and click the "delete" link next to the content you wish to delete. Once you delete something, it is gone forever. This action cannot be undone.
What's the difference between the "viewed" and "taken" statistics displayed on content?
Stories, poems and lyrics all have "view" counts, which measure how many times users have looked at the content. Quizzes, tests and polls, on the other hand, have "taken" counts, which show how many times people have actually submitted answers for the content and received a result. However, to prevent people from artificially and unfairly increasing counts on their own creations, repeatedly refreshing a piece of content won't increase its count.
It says my creation has an average rating of XYZ; what does that mean?
When someone finishes taking your quiz, test or poll, or reading your story, poem or lyrics, they have the option of rating it to tell you how good they thought it was. The number shown is the average rating each voting user has given your creation. For more on ratings, see the Ratings section of the FAQ.
My Messages
How do I send, read, or delete messages?
You will be notified of new and unread messages when you login to your account. You can read, compose, reply to and delete messages by going to your "Messages" page within the Stuff I Made section. Note: any sent messages will be retained in your Sent Box for 30 days. Sent messages older than 30 days will automatically disappear from your Sent Box.
What are messages used for?
Quizilla messages allow registered users to exchange brief comments. They're not meant for lengthy discussions—hence the character limit—and do not serve as e-mail.
Can I send a message to more than one person at a time?
No. You can't add multiple recipients to messages.
Can I block messages from certain people?
You can block individual users, which will prevent them from sending you messages. To block a user, visit his/her profile page and click "Block user," or open a message from that user, if you have one, and click the "Block user" button at the top of the page.
How do I unblock someone?
Visit the blocked user's profile page and click the "Unblock" button.
I don't want to receive e-mail notification of new messages. How do I turn this feature off?
Go to your profile and click the "edit profile" link next to your name. This will take you to the Edit Profile page. Click the "Preferences" tab and then click the "No" option next to "Email me when I get a new message." Then click the "Save changes" button at the bottom of the screen.
Why am I not getting e-mail notification of new messages? I have them turned on.
They may have gotten caught in your e-mail's spam filter. Check your junk mail or spam folder.
My Journal
What is my Journal?
Your journal is your own personal space to vent what you're feeling or express whatever's on your mind. Other users can read your journal and leave you comments on specific entries.
How do I create a journal?
Click on "Journal" in the "Stuff I Made" drop-down menu at the top of the page and then click "New Post," which will open the journal creation engine. Enter a title for your entry in the title field, and then select a mood icon from the drop-down menu to illustrate your current state of mind. Finally, enter you actual journal post in the body field. When you're done writing your entry, hit "Next" to open the "Preview" tab, where you can preview your post. If you'd like to edit your entry, click the "Compose" tab and make changes. If you're satisfied with what you wrote, click "Publish" and publish your journal entry to the Quizilla community.
My Friends
What is my "Friends" page?
Your "Friends" page is the page where you see everyone you have selected as a friend. On this page you will see their pictures (if they have chosen one) and their usernames, both of which link to their profiles. If particular friends are online, their pictures will be highlighted to alert you. Since your "Friends" list is public, other users can see who your friends are and who has added you as a friend.
What exactly are "friends?"
Friends are simply other users you've chosen to add to your "Friends" list. They display on your "Friends" page and show up in your messaging address book. Since you aren't asked to confirm when other users add you as a friend, anyone can be "friends" with you.
How do I add a friend to my "Friends" list?
After logging into the site, go to a user's profile (by clicking their linked image or username) and then click the "Add to friends" button. This user will now be on your "Friends" list.
How do I take someone off my "Friends" list?
After logging into the site, go to the corresponding user's profile (by clicking their linked image or username) and then click the "Remove Friend" button. You can also visit your "Friends" page and click the "Remove" button beneath the corresponding user's image. That user will no longer appear on your "Friends" list.
My Favorites
What is my "Favorites" page?
Your "Favorites" page—previously called "Picks"—is a collection of your preferred content, similar to the Bookmarks in your web browser. Here, you can easily access stuff you want to see again or keep track of things to show your friends.
How do I add content to my "Favorites"?
You can add content to your favorites by clicking the "Add to My Favorites" link that you see at the end of taking a quiz, test or poll, or on a story/poem/lyrics display page. You must be logged in to add content to your favorites. When you click this link as a logged-in user, that content will be added to your favorites and you will receive a confirmation message.
How do I remove content from my "Favorites"?
Go to your Favorites page and click the "Remove" link next to the piece of content you wish to remove.
Can I see other peoples' "Favorites"?
Yes. Your "Favorites" list is visible to everyone; everyone will be able to see what content you have chosen to put there.
My Watch List
What is my "Watch List"?
Your Watch List lets you follow the works of your favorite authors and creators. It is the page where you see everyone you have selected to watch, and information on them. On this page you will see their pictures (if they have chosen one), their names, and links to their creations. Your Watch List will be updated when your watched users create new content. Your Watch List is private, so no other users can see who you have chosen to watch.
How do I add a user to my "Watch List?"
Go to the user's profile page by clicking either their username or image and click the "Add to Watch List" button.
How do I remove a user from my "Watch List?"
Go to your Watch List page and click the "Remove" button underneath the corresponding user's picture. You can also remove a user from your Watch List by visiting the user's profile page and clicking the "Remove From Watch List" button.
My Images
What is my "Images" page?
Your "Images" page is where you see what images you have saved to your account. On this page you can browse, organize and delete existing images, as well as upload new ones.
What kinds of images are allowed here? What are the guidelines for image content?
Guidelines for all content, including images, can be found in Quizilla's Posting Rules.
How do I upload images to my "Images" page?
Go to your "Images" page and click the "Add image" button, which will open an image upload lightbox. Click "Browse" and select the image you wish to upload to your account. Once selected, the image should appear in the lightbox and you'll have the option of assigning that image categories. Click "Ok." The image will now appear on your "Images" page. If you assigned the image a category/categories, it will appear in the corresponding folder/s. If you chose not to designate any categories, the image will appear in the "No Category" section.
How do I delete an image from my "Images" page?
Go to your "Images" page and click the "Delete" button beneath the image you wish to remove. A lightbox will pop up asking you if you're sure you want to delete the selected image. If you click "Delete" from here, the image will be deleted and you'll receive a confirmation message. If you click "Cancel," the lightbox will close and the image will remain on your page.
What are image "Categories?"
Image categories are optional groups you can create and assign images to. They help you organize your stored images and work basically the same way as folders. They are not the same as the content categories on your "Stuff I Made" page.
How do I assign an image a category?
You can assign images a category/categories as you're uploading them, or you can add pre-existing images to categories at any time. To add a category/categories to an image while uploading, click the "Add image" button, which will open an image upload lightbox. Click "Browse" and select the image you wish to upload to your account. Once selected, the image should appear in the lightbox and you'll have the option of assigning that image categories. To add a category/categories to an image already uploaded to your account, click the corresponding image, which will open the edit categories lightbox. Type the desired category/categories into the "Categories" field, or click a linked category within "Your existing categories" to add the image to a category you've previously used. Click "Ok." The image should now appear within the category/categories assigned.
Can an image be assigned to more than one category?
Yes. You can assign an image as many categories as you want.
How do I get rid of a category I don't want anymore?
Go to your "Images" page and click the "Delete category" button next to the category title you wish to remove.
If I delete a category, will all the images in that category be deleted too?
No. Deleting an image category will only remove that category. All images associated with that category will remain on the page and will appear in any other categories they were assigned to, or within the "No category" section if no other categories apply.
If I delete an image from my "Images" page will it still appear in content I previously added it to?
Yes. Deleting an image from your "Images" page will not delete it from any creations it was previously added to. This is to prevent you from accidentally breaking published content. To delete the image from all creations, you must manually remove it from each specific piece of content by opening the corresponding content editor.
I tried to upload an image but it was too big. What does that mean and how do I fix it?
That means that the file size of the image you tried to upload is beyond 500KB, the limit the system allows. Some simple ways of decreasing a file's size are decreasing the image's height and width, or saving the image in the .JPG format instead of the .GIF format.
What is the size limit for image files?
The size limit is 500KB. However, if you want to use image files that exceed our limit, feel free to use Photobucket—an image hosting service—and they'll still display in your creations.

Rating Content
What Are Ratings?
Ratings are designed for you to evalutate other users' content and allow you to see how well your content is liked by your peers. They're also used to calculate the "highest rated" lists. They're based on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the highest.
I found a piece of content that tells people to rate it as high as possible, regardless of how good it is. Is there a rule against this?
There's no official rule against this, but it's highly discouraged. Highly rating someone's creation just because he/she told you to can result in misleading data, and can be very frustrating for other users.
Sharing and Embedding Content
What is the "Share It" feature?
The "Share It" feature is a way of sharing the results of a quiz, test or poll, or the questions or text from a quiz, test, story, poem etc., with others, or taking it with you to your own web page, profile or wherever you want. If someone uses "Share It" to put the text of one of your creations on their web page or profile, you will be acknowledged as the author of it.
How do I send content or results to a friend?
From the results or display page of each piece of content there is a "Share It" box. Choose what you want to share (this result, this quiz, etc.) and how you want to share it (E-mail, AIM, etc.). Or you can manually copy and paste the provided URL into an e-mail or messaging system to send to someone.
How do I copy a piece of content or its results to my web page, profile or blog?
From the results or display page of each piece of content there is a "Share It" box. Choose what you want to embed (this result, this quiz, etc.) and where you want to embed it (MySpace, Facebook, etc.) Or you can manually copy and paste the provided code to the site of your choice.
What kind of "Share It" option should I choose?
How you choose to share/embed content depends on what you want to do with it.
If someone shares one of my creations, will I get credit for it?
Yes. Your name will always appear alongside any of your creations.
I don't want people to be able to share my creations on other websites. How do I prevent them from embedding my stuff?
You have the option to prevent sharing on any of your creations. However, this option cannot be applied automatically to all your creations at once; each creation must be set individually. To set this option, visit the "Options" tab of the corresponding content editor and select "No" next to "Can be shared." Then click "Next" to move to the preview screen and publish your work. Note: Clicking "Publish" if you've already published the creation won't republish it; any changes you made to the content or options will just be updated.
The Lists
What is The Ultimate List?
The Ultimate List applies exclusively to quizzes and tests and is a collection of exemplary content, chosen daily by Quizilla staff.
How do I get one of my quizzes or tests on The Ultimate List?
There are no specific criteria for quizzes and tests selected for the Ultimate List and there's no way to ensure your quiz or test will be featured on it. In general, Ultimate List selections tend to cover popular or interesting topics, have meaningful questions and results, and are usually rated highly by other users.
What are the Top Rated lists and how do I get one of my creations on one?
The Top Rated lists feature the highest-rated quizzes, tests, stories, polls, poems, and lyrics published in the last 30 days, as voted on by Quizilla users. They are updated hourly. A piece of content must have been rated multiple times to qualify for this list.
What are the Most Popular lists and how do I get one of my creations on one?
The Most Popular lists feature the most popular quizzes, tests, stories, polls, poems, and lyrics published in the last 30 days. They are updated hourly. The more times a piece of content has been viewed, the higher on that list it will be. If your creation hasn't had enough "hits" to make the bottom of the list, it won't show up.
What are the "Newest" lists and how do I get one of my creations on one?
The "Newest" lists feature the most recently added quizzes, tests, stories, polls, poems, and lyrics. The lists are updated every 15 minutes. Content will automatically be added to the queue to get placed on the corresponding list when it is created.
Finding Content on Quizilla
How does search work?
The search engine is new and improved and is now faster and more accurate. To search for content, just enter a keyword into the search bar at the top right of any page and click "Go." You'll be taken to the search results page, where you can sort displayed results by relevance, rating or publication date. You can also narrow your results to show only a single content type.
I just published something. Why isn't it showing up in search?
New content appears on your Stuff I Made page and other lists right away, but it can take up to a day for items to show up in the search index.
